Road Running,Track and Field, and Cross Country 

   

 

WALTER WILLIAMS
ATHLETE - ROAD RUNNING, TRACK & FIELD,
AND CROSS COUNTRY

 

1958 - Began Running at Minto High School and led Minto High to many Provincial and Maritime

titles. He personally set Provincial and Maritime records for the half mile, one mile, as well

as Cross Country races.

1958-62 - Walter won over 95% of the races he ran in the Maritimes

March, 1961 - Participated at the Canadian Indoor Track & Field Championship in Winnipeg.

He placed 2nd in the 3-mile race and finished 1st in the 1-mile race. As a result of his

Showing, Walter was approached by a number of U.S. Colleges

Summer, 1961 – Placed 2nd (4 min.20 sec) to #1 ranked Bruce Kidd (4 min 10 sec) in the 1 – mile

Event at the Eastern Canadian Track & Field Championship in Halifax.

 

Won the 8 1/4 mile race in Halifax.

August, 1961   - Placed 2nd in Canadian Track & Field Championship in Regina, losing by 1/10 of a

Second.

September,1961 – Won a Gold Medal in the Juvenile Division of the Canadian Cross Country

Championship - Hamilton

Won Eaton’s of Canada Award as the Outstanding Athlete on the N.B. team.

Other accomplishments:

Won Saint John 5 – mile Road Race   in 1960 & 1961
Won Nova Scotia Highland Games 1 & 3 mile races - 1960 & 1961
Became the first New Brunswick runner to break the 4 minute 30 second mile.

After a 20 year hiatus from running, Walter returned to his sport in 1981 with a

new goal --- to run the famous 26.2 mile Boston Marathon. He achieved his goal in

1985 and ran  9 more Boston’s  on route to a total of 46 marathons . His personal

best time was 2 hours and 36 minutes. In the 1988 Boston Marathon he placed

238th out of 10,000 runners.
