As the Great War ended,
soldiers returned home with renewed hope and a zest for life
like never before.
Times became
prosperous and people began to do things outside of their every
day routines. They not only
worked hard, but also
played hard in recreation activities. Many different sports
activities emerged and
leagues sprang up
throughout the Grand Lake area.
All sports activities
require sponsorship for equipment, uniforms, travel, and
officials. Local groups such
as mining companies,
vendors, and service groups stepped up to support
sports/recreation in the Village.
None did more than
the Minto Legion. The veterans worked tirelessly to support the
entire Minto sports
scene, especially
youth teams. They offered their venue for banquets, donated
trophies, provided transportation,
and
sponsored tournaments.
Minto became a powerhouse in Softball, Baseball, Soccer, Hockey,
Bowling, and Cross Country Running.
The walls of the
Legion provide accolades to many of these champions who not only
excelled locally but also
Provincially and
Nationally.
The generous and dedicated support of the Minto Legion was
instrumental in providing the foundation for
Minto’s
rich sports legacy.
